Every number ten I have carved started on a street like this one. Dust, a ball that has lost its shape, and a man with somewhere to be who stops anyway.

I keep coming back to that pause. That is where the stories begin.

Brazil needed a draw. Uruguay scored twice in the second half, the second from Ghiggia with eleven minutes left, and the biggest crowd football had ever gathered went silent.

I wanted to carve that silence. It is the hardest thing I have tried to make.

Hungary had beaten them 8-3 two weeks earlier and led the final 2-0 after eight minutes. Then the rain came, the weather Fritz Walter liked best, and Helmut Rahn scored with six minutes left.

I sat this one in the stands, still, while everyone around me lost their minds. Somebody has to remember what it looked like.

The last World Cup before the war. Italy kept the trophy at Colombes, and then nobody played for one for twelve years.

I sat with that gap for a long time. A café, a newspaper, and a game everyone assumed would come back.

People ask what I do here. I take what happened and what it felt like, and I keep working until they are the same shape.

The truth is, I wrote the book on 1990 more because of Bilardo than anyone else. A crazy genius on the bench, and all his antics.

Not as it was. Not as it is. As it lives.
